I wonder what the Tillmans think of this ...
Texas Legislators and Christian Groups Fight to Insert God Into Vets' Funerals -- Against Families' Wishes | World | AlterNet:
Richard Tillman discussing his brother's funeral on Real Time |
Shouldn't veterans and their families have the right to decide whether religion -- and what kind -- is welcome at their own funerals? The Department of Veterans Affairs says yes. But three Texas Congressman and Christian military organizations want to strip away this basic right. Instead, they want to be allowed to impose unwanted Christian ceremonies on the military funerals of everybody who has served the red, white, and blue.

This is the inaugural Cryptonaut-in-Exile Secular Humanist Atheist ReTweet of the Week Award. Fondly referred to in these parts as, the SHART of the Week, or just the SHART, for short.
Enjoy the SHART!
If you see something that looks like SHART material be sure to bring it to my attention. I never did get around to making a Glasgow Kiss of the Week page back when our panel of experts was awarding those; but, now that I'm excited to bring you the best SHARTs, I think I many finally get around to devoting a proper page to it. Gives me a project that will keep me out of City of Wonder for a few hours one of these nights.

Word on the tweet: #Fuquay-Varina, August 13, 2011
My semi-regular roundup of tweets from or about Fuquay has me in fighting form today:
Uh, if they're "hoes," does it matter where they're from? Isn't that they're "easy" why you're calling them "hoes"?
Also, you know tweets like this mean you're an asshole, right?
--------------------------------------------------
Good grief. Twenty four more degrees in advanced bullshit, coming up. The "Triune God"? (From the academically rigorous Divinity School's twitter profile.) Is it too much to hope you lot study Brighid, the Exalted One?
And, yes, I know this isn't a Fuquay-Varina post, dude's name is Fuquay and he's going to Duke so there's a tangential NC connection. Close enough.
--------------------------------------------------
Oh, I get it, the liberals are to blame. Of course. Maybe we could afford the Great Wall of Texas you'd like to build if we weren't so busy trying to destroy the government with obstructionism, wrong-headed policies, immoral and illegal foreign wars, and tax cuts for the wealthy?
--------------------------------------------------
I'm not sure my hometown's page (which may or may not be the one that started this trend) paints a very positive picture of us either. But it's fun anyways. I couldn't find the Fuquay page. Search on Facebook is completely useless.
--------------------------------------------------
Many of them probably are. Not all though. This tweet? Not helping matters.

Wrong, fool. We are everywhere, having no rhythm! Not for nothing, you better be a pretty freaking awesome dancer to be judging anybody else's dancing. And, even if you are, you're still so full of yourself nobody with any self respect likes you.

--------------------------------------------------
I take it that's not a good thing? Because I'm imagining Fuquay's Aviator Smokehouse times the Bull City Burger and Brewery and that's sounding pretty freaking awesome.

UNC and Duke assign joint summer reading for incoming freshmen.
Inside the List - NYTimes.com:
Can a peaceable literary vegetarian from Brooklyn bring together what a bloody Southern basketball rivalry has torn asunder? That was surely the hope of administrators at Duke and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, when they chose Jonathan Safran Foer’s “Eating Animals” as the joint summer reading for this fall’s incoming freshmen.
Left Handers Day, August 13th (My handedness identity crisis exacerbated.)
Left Handers Day, August 13th - Official Site
Confession: I don't know if I'm "left handed" or "right handed."
I throw and hit lefty. I write righty. Ask me to kick a field goal, I'll use my left foot. I'm a pretty wicked ping pong player with either hand. I eat with my right hand. Ask me to pick up guitar and try to play a chord and I get confused because I'm not sure which way is more comfortable to hold it.
I'm not ambidextrous, although I can write with my left hand, it's easier if I do so from right to left and backwards, mirror image style. More mixed-handed, same as Phil Mickelson, apparently, as well as quite a few of the world's elite athletes according to that Wikipedia article.

100 Things I Love About My Favorite Movies (Part 2)

Malcom was expecting to meet with the War Committee from In the Loop
H/T Kevin at Ghost in the Machine for reminding me of the urgency of including something of Peter Capaldi's performance here.

Dennis the Constitutional Peasant
The ending of Brazil
What can you say?
Brick: the note-perfect homage
Image via Movies Online |
But if you didn't care for The Maltese Falcon, I doubt you got this far.
Grocer and Blank in the diner in Grosse Pointe Blank
I haven't been talking about movies that hit all the right notes in score and soundtrack, but this was one that worked well for me. It's also got a fight scene with Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, who was the baddie in one Jackie Chan's greatest fight scenes. But I chose this diner scene because it never fails to crack me up.
Erin Brockovich
Julia Roberts knocked it out of the park.
Kevin Kline and Jamie Lee Curtis in A Fish Called Wanda
The funny thing is, I don't really care much for Kevin Kline. But I loved Otto.
Mozart's laugh in Amadeus
Kevin put the Commendatore scene in his recent post, but in this case I didn't need the reminder, I had already planned to include a snippet of Hulce doing the Mozart laugh, it just didn't make it into my first post because I've got a clumsy, time-consuming method of snagging clips from my DVDs and wanted to focus on getting that one filled out with scenes I could embed from youtube.
Khan!!!!!!
Brick Top from Snatch
Vicious. That ridiculous shirt and those glasses make him perfect.
The sick feeling in the pit of my stomach when Do The Right Thing tears it down.
"I'm your huckleberry."
Tombstone is not a great western. I'm not sure you can call it a good movie, period. But I still find myself saying "I'm your huckleberry," because of this scene.
The NHL 93 scene in Swingers
I played so much NHL 93, there was no way I couldn't love this scene.
Kevin Costner in Silverado
Costner's bloated epics taint, I think, our memory of his better performances. He's a wild kid here, but when he turns to those to fellows he told Paden with supreme confidence he could take, and says boom, it's such a calm, steady voice ... that voice of his puts a foundation under Jake's arrogance and puppy dog playfulness.
Tilda Swinton in Michael Clayton
Frances McDormand in Fargo
I know that viewed on its own, this clip is going to be all accent taken out of context, but I can't put the whole movie in so I may have to remind you that your ear gets used to that nasal bleating over the course of the full length. The point here is Frances McDormand is able to convey both Margie's charm and sweetness, as well as her competence and unflappability. She's as nonplussed as a slaughterhouse worker at the sight of blood and wrecked flesh, but her humanity is undiminished. It's a great performance in what may be the Coen Bros. finest movie.
Chevy Chase in Fletch
Chevy Chase ... too smarmy by half, he's never been able to fully capitalize on that comic genius. He's at his post-SNL best in the Fletch movies though.
Lloyd Bridges in Airplane!
The long tracking shot fight scene from Tony Jaa's The Protector
There's a scene early in Ong Bak where Jaa leaps up and knees a motorcycle riding baddie on the head, cracking his helmet that I thought of first, for me it was the moment you know you're looking at the first shot at a legitimate heir to Jackie Chan. Jaa is great, but his movies range from uneven at best, to almost unbearable at worst. He keeps teasing with flashes of that acrobatic brilliance ...
Myrna Loy and William Powell in the The Thin Man
I'm not sure there's been better dialogue for, or chemistry between, a husband and wife since Nick and Nora Charles graced the silver screen.
---------------------------------------------------
Again, I could keep going all night, but I'm tired and it's been a long day. 32 more here means I've done 41 total. I've got Bill Murray, Robert Downey, Jodie Foster, Clive Owen, Michael Moore, Simon Pegg, and Chris Farley at the front of my mind for next time. And I haven't gotten to my favorite monsters yet!

Alleged bigfoot sighting in Minnesota woods
Bigfoot sighting in Minnesota woods [VIDEO] - Minneapolis News - The Blotter:
If not a straight up hoax, then my next best guess is they surprised a hunter.
Image via Citypages |
A Minnesota farmer and his wife were walking in the woods north of Stillwater one July night, when they saw a strange animal, according to a new YouTube video. The couple thought they'd come upon a deer, but heard a 'low odd sounding grunt,' and decided to get closer and see what it was.Full video blow with a bit over-analyzing:
'Doesn't look like a deer to me,' the farmer explains in the set-up to the video.
In the video clip the man captured that night -- now the subject of a thorough investigation by a Youtube curator called 'SasquatchWatcher' -- a large, red-haired figure is seen passing through the woods for a single fleeting moment.
If not a straight up hoax, then my next best guess is they surprised a hunter.

Evangelicals Question The Existence Of Adam And Eve : NPR:
Durer's depiction of Adam and Eve via NPR |
'From my viewpoint, a historical Adam and Eve is absolutely central to the truth claims of the Christian faith,' says Fazale Rana, vice president of Reasons To Believe, an evangelical think tank that questions evolution. Rana, who has a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Ohio University, readily admits that small details of Scripture could be wrong.
'But if the parts of Scripture that you are claiming to be false, in effect, are responsible for creating the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith, then you've got a problem,' Rana says.

Untitled Po(em?)st
A fly on the bathroom mirror.
Glass is smooth and solid, but it isn't and it isn't (or is it and is it?).
The fly reminds you with is it's fragile, powerful legs that there's purchase.
As long as we're at it we might as well remember all those old New England farmhouses
where the glass has gone wavy and is literally puddling, just slowly -- or not.
Our guts are an ecosystem that affect the way we think.
The way we think!
"There is a world inside the world ... "
You don't even know what you know when you know it.
(True fact.)
Our own minds are opaque to us.
But they can be read, by the astute and machines.
It's possible for a technician, and maybe a professional poker player, to know what you're going to do
before you even know you know.
At Jordan Lake, algae bloom and there's a fish kill.
Also, a couple teenage boys stabbed a girl from your town, stabbed her to death;
They stabbed thirty times and leave her body in the water.
One of the boys is in the country illegally, so the murder is politicized.
You wonder if the algae bloom is a symptom of climate change, or improper waste management,
Or the fault of anyone or anything at all.
Now the fish are politicized as well.
When talking to people in China, you wonder what they know and hear about the two Koreas
Lobbing artillery fire at one another.
You don't ask though because they're coworkers and any conversation might be too political.
The sun is a star and
"We are all made of stars ... "
And you wouldn't stab a star, or stardust, but still that girl was killed.
You know this one guy on facebook who's funny as hell.
He was a friend of a friend then, you didn't know how whip smart he was.
But you do now.
You're both made of stars so some stars are funnier than others.
"Little man with a gun in his hand ... "
A guy in Ohio shoots up his neighborhood because he lost his temper.
You bicker with the numbskulls in the comments of the CNN article because ...
Because ... ?
And those deaths, and his AK-47 -- it's all politicized.
And we are all still
Made out of stars.
"A poem is a list of Things to Do ... "
So this isn't a poem.
Those things, they were already done.

"Great books" that aren't. (Haters gonna hate; sometimes they're right to.)
Tom Perrotta, Francine Prose, and others on "great books" that aren't great. - By Juliet Lapidos - Slate Magazine:

Joyce via I Just Read About That |
The two books that take the most lambasting in this article, Ulysses and Gravity's Rainbow, deserve it.Honestly I've never been persuaded by Ulysses. To my mind, Joyce's best and most genuine work is the wonderful Dubliners; everything afterwards smacks of striving to write a "great" work, rather than simply striving to write—it's all too voulu. Although there are, of course, beautiful and breathtakingly authentic things in the novel (who could not love that tang of urine in the breakfast kidneys?), what spoils Ulysses for me, each time, is the oppressive allusiveness, the wearyingly overdetermined referentiality, the heavy constructedness of it all. Reading the book, for me, is never a rich and wonderful journey, filled with marvels and (no matter how many times you may read a book) surprises—the experience I want from a large and important novel; it's more like being on one of those Easter egg hunts you went on as a child—you constantly feel yourself being managed, being carefully steered in the direction of effortfully planted treats. Which, of course, makes them not feel very much like treats at all.The tip-off, for me, are the Gilbert and Linati Schemas, now included in most editions: the road-maps to the books that Joyce concocted for friends, minutely indicating the novel's themes, its labored structures, the Homeric analogies, etc.—it's as if Joyce were both the author of his book and the future comp lit grad student who's trying to decipher it. Indeed, it's small wonder that Ulysses has become the bible of academic lit departments; it seems to have been practically written for literary theorists. (Dubliners, by contrast, is a book for "ordinary readers"—a term I use admiringly.)

In Recruiting, Facebook and Twitter Are Coaches’ Friends - NYTimes.com:
Duke's Coack K reacts to a recruits 'unfriending' |
“It drove me nuts,” he said. “You’re trying to call kids on the phone to talk, and they don’t want to communicate like that.”Keeping the NCAA rules committee busy, no doubt.
So Roberts reluctantly joined Facebook, which coaches and recruits say accounts for 50 percent of their recruiting interaction. Twitter is second and gaining ground, they say, with its direct-message function offering the bite-size communication preferred by teenagers. Although Luddites remain — the Southern California defensive coordinator, Monte Kiffin, 71, refers to Facebook as Facemask — most have adapted to the point that Facebook, in-box and Tweet are verbs in the coaching lexicon.

If Politico has it right, team Obama not only expects Mitt Romney to be the GOP nominee, it is ready to unleash a 'ferocious personal assault' against him. The go-negative approach would have two fronts: portray Romney as a 'weird' guy out of touch with ordinary people and as a greedy CEO willing to sacrifice jobs. For guidance, it will model its strategy in part on the one George W. Bush used in depicting John Kerry as an aloof rich guy.Is it really an attack if it's ... uh ... accurate? I'm not a fan of negative campaigns; I am a fan of speaking your mind and telling the truth. There's a substantive difference between Negative Campaign A calling Candidate B an anti-American, secret Muslim, non-citizen, terrorist's pal and Negative Campaign B calling Candidate A a greedy, job-killing CEO for being a greedy, job-killing CEO, and pointing out that, if his idea of a joke is telling a bunch of down-on-their-luck folks that he's "unemployed too," then he is an out of touch, weird, plutocrat. Just don't make fun of his magic underwear, that's out of bounds.

Rock Beyond Belief is back on -- Spring 2012.
Rock Beyond Belief:
On March 31st, 2012, Fort Bragg will be hosting Rock Beyond Belief with the full support it was promised. This just might be the turning point in the foxhole atheist community’s struggle for acceptance, tolerance and respect. It’s an amazing time to be a non-believer in the U.S. Military on the cusp of a major break-through.
The public is invited, free of charge, to see this revolution begin to bear fruit. Our key-note speaker, Richard Dawkins regularly draws crowds in the thousands, especially in the so-called Bible Belt. On the rare occasions where his lectures and speeches are free, he sells out the capacity even faster than usual. None of this will be a problem for us, as our venue – the Fort Bragg Main Post Parade Field is home to the annual 4th of July celebration, with tens of thousands of attendees. The rest of our equally solid lineup may fluctuate slightly, and details will emerge in the next week or so.

"Upset Parent" Fox News trotted out to bash unions was a drunk-driving Republican Party Chair. Nice try.

Drunk driving WI Republican Party Chair stooge |
You may have heard about the resignation of Wisconsin's Columbia County Republican Chairwoman, Amber Hahn, after an accident in which she was found to be driving drunk with her three children in the car. But if Hahn looks familiar to anyone outside of Columbia County, it may be because of her stealth appearance on Fox & Friends as an 'upset Wisconsin parent' attacking public schools' lesson plan to teach the history of unions and labor unions.
Here she is, 'sharing her personal story,' on Fox & Friends in Feburary, 2011:
