Overfishing large predators such as shark, tuna and cod in the past 40 years has left the oceans out of balance, and could result in the disappearance of these fishes by 2050, according to Villy Christensen of the University of British Columbia's Fisheries Center.

Four people over the course of two or three days. Two of whom had both arms bitten off. You can have your sandy white beaches, and your waves, and your frolicking on the shore ... I'll be at the pool bar.

Sea Shepherd had accused the Japanese ship, the Shonan Maru 2, of deliberately ramming its boat, the Ady Gil. The Japanese vessel said the protest boat drove into its path on purpose.

The report by Maritime New Zealand said that several incidents in days leading up to the collision had 'contributed to a tense operating environment and probable uncertainty over each other's intentions'.

Look, I don't know who's at fault here. I wasn't there. But, that Japanese ship name made me think of the Kobayashi Maru so I'm linking this.

Also, Japan, what did the whales ever do to you?! Why not focus on finishing off the great white sharks instead? Eat their fins or whatever you do.

A Fuquay-Varina family had quite a scary encounter during their trip to Carolina Beach over the weekend.
Hugh Hudock, tells NBC-17 that his family were swimming about a mile south of the Carolina Beach fishing pier on Sept. 14, when they saw a shark in the water.
'The ocean was a bit odd that day, very placid with gentle waves. There was some fish activity throughout the day with larger mullets jumping out of the water at times,' said Hudock. 'Just got lucky to catch the shark encounter on video.'

Too funny. My wife and I took the kids to Kure Beach (not far from where this family was) only a few days before their encounter.

They Were There First, The Ocean's Not For Me

BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | Many sharks 'facing extinction': I'm terrified of sharks. It doesn't help that a neighbor relayed a "how about that?" story that pretty much makes it impossible for me to go in the ocean ever again. My neighbor saw some of those planes with the propellers that tilt-up flying low over the beach and it turned out that one was being piloted by a friend of his who is currently on active duty. The friend told him he saw two huge sharks maybe 50-60 feet from a pier where there were bunches of people in the water who were, presumably, blissfully unaware of the presence of giant fracking sharks nearby. This story is tangential to the link; I'm not actually advocating shark extinction. I'm just saying, stay out of the water.

Bear vs. Monkey

I don't know why but this article made me think that it's time to update Rock-Paper-Scissors and do Bear-Monkey-Shark or something like that. Bear obviously beats Monkey. Monkey would beat Shark (sharks would be helpless in the jungle, totally unable to swing through the trees -- and I never heard of Shark Kung Fu). Bear vs. Shark is tricky though ... can anything beat Bear? Bears can swim and, if dolphins can beat sharks, I'm sure a bear would maul a shark. Maybe the game should be Bear-Monkey-Ditka?
