There is an untraceable moment at which the past slips from the realm of memory into deep time. Perhaps it is around the 100-year mark, when those who witnessed any given event have long since died. Just occasionally, technology offers a way down the rabbit hole. There exists, for instance, an 1890 recording of the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson reciting “The Charge of the Light Brigade”, his response to the account in the Times of that tragic manoeuvre. There are also two recordings, from 1902 and 1904, of the castrato Alessandro Moreschi, a member of the Sistine Chapel Choir for 30 years and one of the last boys to be mutilated for choral fodder.

Incredible though it may seem, six veterans who served in the Revolution were alive eighty-three years after British General Cornwallis surrendered to the Americans at Yorktown ending the War of Independence. Even more incredible is that, because of Rev. Hillard’s efforts, photos of the six veterans are available in the historical record, the only photos of any of the War’s soldiers.

I've blogged about Rev. Waldo before, but thought this page with pictures of other veterans of the Revolutionary War merited a link for Memorial Day.

Darvish: Dudes, chill.

Just installed an extension that adds a 'share on ...' feature to Google+ and wanted to see how it played with Blogger. As long as I'm giving it a go, I want to point out that if you've not circled me on G+, you're not experiencing the Full Cdog. It's really not as disgusting as it sounds.

For example, G+ has this feature that makes it very easy to put text over a shared image, so when I feel like doing something like this:

Yes, I realize now I capitalized the 'l' incorrectly. Derrrrr.

It's easier to do over there.

Braving sub-zero temperatures, she has thrown caution — and her clothes — to the wind to tame two beluga whales in a unique and controversial experiment.

Natalia Avseenko, 36, was persuaded to strip naked as marine experts believe belugas do not like to be touched by artificial materials such as diving suits.
