Reading is ... Fun-dog-mental? (Other post titles considered included: "Yo dawg, I heard you like reading ... ")

The dogs who listen to children reading | Education | The Guardian:

If I had the energy this morning, I'd paste some hipster glasses
on that dog and add a quote like, "Today I Feel Silly, again? You know,
we have A Children's Treasury of Mark E. Smith Verse on the shelf."

When children read to him, Danny does not criticise or correct their pronunciation. He just nods and pricks up an ear, although sometimes he closes his eyes and appears not to be listening.

Danny is a greyhound and a novel way of encouraging pupils at Oakhill primary school in Tamworth, Staffordshire, to read aloud. A 'listening dog', he is part of a scheme that originated in the US called Reading Education Assistance Dogs (Read).

  1. I've actually seen a lot of research to support this ... and some firsthand experience, with the knowledge that there is nothing cuter than my seven-year-old sandwiched on the couch between a golden retriever and a black lab, reading them a story and saying once in awhile, "Now, Mollie, you're really going to like this part!" :-)
