Smokey's BBQ Shack (Good barbecue in Morrisville, NC)

Smokey's BBQ Shack

Surprise lunch with the missus and kiddos today. They were up in Morrisville for a play date and I had some time between meetings so we they swung by the office and I convinced them to try a BBQ joint I'd just read about: Smokey's BBQ Shack.

I had the wings and everybody else got the pulled pork (so I knew I'd be able to have some) and we had a variety of sides. It was excellent. The kids, under five, ate free, that was nice for the budget. Kevin, one of the owners, was friendly and the atmosphere was fun. They don't all it a shack for nothing. Blake and Amelia were fascinated by the decor, particularly the strange "monster" mounted on the wall, which was hilarious because it was a bit of taxidermist humor that wasn't easy to explain. I'm reluctant to say what it was because, well, it sounds kind of bizarre and unappetizing, but don't let that put you off.

The BBQ was tasty. I'm not the biggest fan of East Carolina style BBQ, generally too vinegary for my taste, but this was either milder, sweeter, and had a better balance of flavors than what I've had before, or I'm just getting accustomed to it. With the exception of a bland potato salad, the sides we tried (baked beans, green beans, fried okra, and the hush puppies) were all flavorful and had the appropriate textures, etc., nothing seemed as if it had been sitting out too long or anything like that.

If you work on the right side of RTP to head down 54 into Morrisville, I'd definitely recommend giving it a try.
