Collected here are my posts about individual Doctor Who stories. You'll find proper Episode Guides and more detailed overviews at the BBC website, the AV Club, the TARDIS Index File, and countless other places ... these are my personal reactions, those of an American 40-something introduced to, and hooked on, Doctor Who by PBS broadcasts of the mid-to-late 70s.

While personal and culturally-specific, the hope is they'll be of use to those who are new to Doctor Who, as well as those of a similar background if -- for nothing else -- deciding what order to watch or collect the stories. I'm also hoping that while writing about them, I'll be drafting a larger, coherent narrative about why the show is worth watching at all, and how individual stories reflect and exemplify the series' values when they succeed, and how they fall short when they trip over themselves.

I'm not sure yet how to handle season numbers of the classic and new series, the story numbers of the two-parters of the new series, seasons with regard to the xmas specials, "Shada," and if I'll even get around to stuff like the mini-webisodes, anything non-canonical or dubiously canonical like the Big Finish audios, comics, Virgin New Adventures, BBC Books, etc. But, I'll give it a go and revise as I hit hurdles. I follow the US DVD release story numbers for the classic series -- which don't line up with the Doctor Who Magazine story numbers -- so when we get to the new series I am completely divorced from the generally accepted DWM numbers. It's a bit ugly, but I don't want to use both conventions, nor have I chosen one over the other, or some other system, or none at all. Yet.

Out of the gate, I'm linking some older reaction posts I'm not entirely thrilled with, so those'll get new reviews with the next re-watch. I'm also going to make an effort to keep revising the posts to both fix my mistakes and add new thoughts/reactions as they are spurred by watching other stories and reading what other fans are writing. While writing these, I've found myself engaged by the write-ups at Shabogan Graffiti, Squabbling Rubber (where the writing is a cut above), Adventures with the Wife in Space, Blogtor Who, Docteur Who [FR], Unearthly Doctor, Tea With Morbius and The Patient Centurion. I recommend reading their appraisals as well. There's probably nobody doing a better and more ambitious job of writing a critical appraisal of the series as a whole than Philip Sandifer at TARDIS Eruditorum. (With the launch of Phil's Eruditorum Press, Jack's Shabogan Graffiti, the Pex Lives crew, and Jane of Jane Says, are now under one roof.) When folks point out that I may be "overthinking" things a bit, I comfort myself by thinking, if that's the case, then Sandifer and the legion of insightful, encyclopedically knowledgeable, and well-spoken commenters on his blog are *really* wasting their time.

The list below is a complete list of the televised stories. Symbols at the end are simply for me to note for myself that I've watched them again recently but don't have them in my collection -- or do, but only on VHS, and no longer have a VHS player handy, so they're awaiting DVD replacement. The lost episodes that don't have the symbol just indicate I've got as much as possible via the "Lost in Time" DVD collection, which has the extant episodes, some fragments, and audio tracks from the missing stories. Hovering over the link to a story reveals a #HotTake, which isn't to say some (or many, or most) of the posts are anything more than that, just longer.

A word about giving credit where credit's due. I've mentioned several blog/websites above that I follow but that list is by no means complete. There are scores of other bloggers, tumblrs, reviewers, zines, and books that I read as well, not the least of which is the About Time series by Tat Woods & Lawrence Miles. It is almost inevitable I have written or will write something thinking it is an original thought or turn of phrase only to have it turn out I read it somewhere else first. I am doing my best to link to those sources I paraphrase or quote directly. Please bring any errors of scholarship or attribution to my attention and I will gladly link and attribute to make it right.

The Doctor Who Transcripts have been an invaluable resource while writing about the stories. Having the ability to bring up a transcript and 'ctrl+f' to find a quote that was too long to write down without pausing and rewinding while watching has been such a boon.

Then, there are the GIFs and images I use in the posts. When I started, they were virtually all harvested from google image search and tumblr searches. Often, I link directly to the image, but sometimes I put a credit or link in the caption. I do not represent that I have made any images except those that are clearly pictures of my monitor, or me holding a dvd, a novelization, or some other photo I took myself and saved to flickr or my desktop. Recently, I've made a few GIFs using makeagif.com as well, so you'll notice some have my cdogzilla.net credit in them. If I have used an image inappropriately, I will cheerfully take it down or give link credit where it's due.

On the To Do list for this page: refine my grading system, similar to what Robert Christgau has done on his site. Where Christgau reviews all things of a kind, that is to say albums, I'm only reviewing one (or two, if you prefer) series against itself. My grades will eventually have to be on sort of a rough bell curve where a C will mean it's a run-of-the-mill episode of Doctor Who, not necessarily a C in relation to episodes of all TV series. Where I might grade out the series in relation to all other series, well, that's another can of worms. You can reasonably conclude, based on the fact it's basically my most fannishly favoritest series of all time, that it gets a high grade; but, it's also a different beast than each of The Wire, ST:TNG, Sports Night, Deadwood, Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Prisoner, Sense8, and the other lead contenders for the crown; consequently, a C episode of Who might be qualitatively miles away from a C episode of Deadwood, for example. I love Doctor Who but I'm not going to sit here and tell you it's something it's not.

Rough Guide to the Grading Schema

Ay caramba, I really messed myself up here. Started reformatting this page so I could more easily download to excel and do 'text-to-columns' with consistent use of hyphens as delimiters, then realized too late my letter grades with a minus screwed that all up. So, I'm forced to resort to numeric grading on the posts, 0 (F) to 13 (A+) scale. Dammit. Probably going to have to go back and change this all again later when I decide it's too ugly.)

A 13 is an A+: a masterpiece that does not diminish by repeated watching. Look, nothing's perfect, but this grade indicates an exemplary entry in the series. These are your must-have, watch-me-first stories.
A 12 is an A: an excellent story with moments of greatness. It may have a few small flaws, or one or two they-really-should-have-fixed-that-moments.
An 11 is anA-: still a very good story. It may have pacing problems on top of its small issues, but no major flaws.
A 10 is a B+: also a very good story, but it may have a significant flaw embedded in otherwise quality material, or just too many minor issues. Or, it's not seriously flawed, but not quite ambitious enough to warrant an A.
A 9 is a B: a story that's likely to have more defenders than detractors in fandom, but is one the casual fan of an era will not enjoy as much as the ardent. It's probably a story that was not ambitious to begin with, and had either a major flaw, pacing problems (got boring for stretches), or several minor flaws.
An 8 is a B-: a mostly competent, interesting story that is more likely to divide opinion. Bad acting, too much bonehead science fakery, and/or tedious stretches might be the problem here.
A 7 is a C+: a nice try, but missed the mark. It's possible, if not likely a casual fan could enjoy a C+ story while sober. Might be an ambitious story that overreached and face-planted in the effort, or one that wasn't trying to be good and succeeded at not being particularly good rather too well.
A 6 is a C: inoffensive, will still have some redeeming scenes, and can be enjoyed by the fan who is slightly drunk.
A 5 is a C-: marred by some notable incompetence and/or indifference, and only salvaged by good scene or two. It's failures are verging away from 'unintentionally funny' towards 'simply unfunny'.
A 4 is a D+: one that should only be watched as part of an effort to watch the entire series. It's either deadly dull or offensive in some way. The + means it might have a few reasonably clever lines of dialogue or some other hints of charm.
A 3 is a D: people should have been fired.
A 2 is a D-: one only the ardent fan tries to watch, and even that fan can't bear it, so finds other things to do to distract from the train wreck.
A 1 is an F+: somebody involved in the production at some level, discernibly tried to do something to salvage a horrible mess, but failed.
A 0 is an F: seems nobody even tried to put a velvet glove over the iron fist of contempt for the viewer. Everyone involved in the production should be ashamed of themselves.
