R-e-s-p-e-c-t, find out what it means to me ...

Respect First, Then Gun Control - The New York Times

Because letting Red State gun-lovers lead has been working so well.

And while the NRA and their supporters have been leading on the issue of gun control, how exactly have they been productively respectful of the majority of people who want firearm sales and ownership to be more regulated? I don't feel like I've been respected, but at least I haven't been shot to death yet so I've got that going for me.

In the wake of the Parkland shooting, one of my neighbors shared a meme blaming school shootings on the lack of prayer in schools and the godlessness of society. Basically, he thought the most useful thing he could share was that people like me, who ask that others keep their religious beliefs to themselves, but worship any way they like as long as they're not forcing down the throats of non-believers of folks of a different faith than their own, are to blame for mass shootings. Not people who vote for NRA-backed politicians, for the status quo or worse, when it comes to regulation of firearms. Nah. Apparently the fact I've never bought a firearm, never voted Republican, have spoken out and marched against the NRA for decades, and am raising my children to be open to the best of religious teaching, regardless of the faith tradition they come from, to be tolerant of the religious, respectful of their traditions, but also to question, to think for themselves and to be sceptical, and to stand up for their freedoms ... apparently that means it's me and others like me who are the problem.

The hypocrisy, the arrogance, and the ignorance of people who blithely share victim-blaming platitudes (because the kids clearly didn't pray enough either) makes me tremble with rage. I don't expect to be applauded for not punching that asshole in the face, nor for continuing to be polite to him when our paths cross, but it would not be wise to not take my continued forbearance for granted. Eye to eye, in person, I'm going to expect to be treated with respect and I will say my piece when the topic comes up. My style is to ask questions, to listen and paraphrase back to confirm my understanding, and only then to point out factual errors if any, and ask if we agree about the implications of a stated position, but I won't let any bullshit go unchallenged either. If you're going to look me in the eye and blame me for dead kids, you'd better convince me that more assault weapons in the hands of domestic abusers, troubled teens, white nationalists, Christian (and other) religious extremists will prevent more deaths. I'll let you make your case, but unless you can convince me, you'll either take back the accusation or fists will fucking fly.

What The Media Gets Wrong About Reality Reflects What It Can't Accept About Itself

Of course pols are comfortable meeting a press comprised of genial buffoons.
I read and follow @mattyglesias, generally without having to pull my hair out, but this tweet feels illustrative of how bad even insightful analysts, reporters, and commentators are at recognizing how much of their coverage of issues is garbage, or worse:

The So-Called Liberal Media is terrible at holding liars accountable for lying. The press, in my view, should be impartial, not impassive. Lies and distortions should make journalists angry, and they should be allowed, encouraged even, to bring that anger to bear in service of presenting accurate information. But they aren't.

Oh, sure, there are plenty of rageheads out there, and there's a risk of being perceived as one of them. I'm not arguing though that guys like Yglesias should emulate the O'Reillys, Limbaughs, and Becks of the world. There's a way to get angry that's level-headed, cool, and dispassionate. There's an anger that's insistent, can be abrupt, and dismissive of nonsense. That's the anger the press fails to channel. Too often, they mistake impartiality for an obligation to respect bullshit because it's only "fair" to give the other side of an argument a hearing. The problem is when the other side of the argument is demonstrably wrong -- not based on evidence, not constructed with valid reasoning -- it should not be treated as unassailable.

Where I'm going with this is, it seems to me, Yglesias thinks Sanders is wrong but, from what I can tell, has no reason to ... except that what Sanders asserts strikes at Yglesias's profession, and his profession's ethics, and so, for Yglesias and his ilk, it is inconceivable that Sanders might have a true belief despite the abundant evidence in support of the conclusion Sanders has reached.

Murphy points this out ...

But, if you follow the discussion, you'll see the wagons being circled in defense of (again, in what appears to my outsider's eyes to be) the current sorry state of the Fourth Estate.

The Professional Chomsky Defamation Industry

Honest critiques of Chomsky are not to be confused with the defamation industry. It would be nothing short of a miracle if a man of Chomsky’s prolific output and breadth did not invite disagreement. He has published in excess of a hundred books on multiple disciplines, on science, on philosophy, on government, on economics, on the media, on history, often with a view to upset conventional platitudes. A critical appraisal of his work is useful to the student of political science, and the first to undertake such a critique ought to be those who share his ideals to make his analysis more effective.
What is salient about the professional Chomsky hounders though is how little error they uncover. It is because they are not engaged in criticism, in the inspection of whether his arguments hold up against the evidence. They are simply practitioners of vilification.
Also salient: how many of these hounders are on the so-called Left. The gatekeeping is buttressed from both ends of the acceptable neo-liberal spectrum.
