When You Gotta Go

Good stuff to know: The Best Public Toilets In New York City.

Ziesing's Catalog

My freshman year of college, I discovered Yo La Tengo by reading a book catalog (Ziesing's) with a little article by Lucius Shepard in it in which Lucius listed a bunch of bands he was digging at the time. I liked the name, so I bought President/New Wave Hot Dogs and have been devoted to their music ever since. So when Lucius talks, I listen. Here's an old article I stumbled across where Lucius talks up Paul Mann's novels.

Yuen Woo-Ping Bodes Well

Following up on Mega's Chow Yun Fat link, here's some more info on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the new CYF/Michelle Yeoh movie coming out this summer -- I see Yuen Woo-Ping is the fight choreographer ... cool. Finally saw a teaser for Shanghai Noon on tv. I was pleasantly surprised how promising it looks.

Rasslin' Representation

More on the rasslin' theme. Bob Backlund is running for Congress in Connecticut's 1st District. I can't even muster the energy to work up a decent dig. When Jimmy 'Superfly' Snuka puts together a ticket with S.D. 'Special Delivery' Jones, then I'll be ready to head to the ballot box.

Chuck Norris: So, So Lame

You need help? I just watched Walker, Texas Ranger ... and it wasn't the first time.

The Elian Saga

Watched Elian's cousin get interviewed on NBC news this morning after Elian was removed at gunpoint from the house in Miami: she's kinda nuts.

"We didn't know Marshals were gonna come..." Whatever. Everybody else in the world knew what was coming, weren't they watching the news?

"They didn't need guns..." Wish they hadn't, but we all saw the protester who, when interviewed on tv, babbled inanely about " ... you remember Waco? This gonna be another Waco, my friend ..." You gotta take some of soft-skulls at their word and prepare for the worst.

"It didn't have to come to this..." No, it didn't. The boy could have been given to his father, his legal and rightful custodian, as soon as was possible.

"They aren't human, the people who did this ... Janet Reno has no heart ... they are dogs ..." That's the kind of seige-mentatlity/distorted thinking that head cases indulge in before they do something stupid and monstrous to another human being.

Those Marshals are human beings. Human beings who were given the difficult job of enforcing the rule of law in hostile, potentially dangerous situation. To imply otherwise is to say that they are a legitimate target for violent actions -- that's insanity. I hope the great-uncle and cousin don't have that poor kid's head all screwed up from listening to their self-serving justifications for their immoral behavior.

Being John Malkovich

Being John Malkovich was one of my favorite films last year, despite coming apart at the seams a bit at the end. More from Stipe's film factory could be a good thing.

Flaming Lips and Looper

Just got in from seeing Looper and the Flaming Lips at the Webster in lovely downtown Hartford. The Lips put on a solid show, but seem like they might be getting a little long in the tooth. Looper, though, Looper was quite good. I have a strong feeling I'm going to be late for work tomorrow.

Bellyachin'

I forgot to pay my taxes yesterday. Remembered 10 minutes ago. I thought today was the deadline in CT, something to do with Patriot's Day, but evidently I was wrong. The Post Office was dark and closed. There were a few other absent-minded folk hanging around the mailboxes debating whether to go look for an open Post Office (in Massachussetts?) or just drop the forms in the box and hope for the best. I didn't hang around, just dropped the forms and left. Having to pay in after paying half of every paycheck ... insult on top of injury, with a little more injury like a cherry on top.

Username Blues

This ever happen to you ... you register at a site, give yourself a username and password, forget about the site for a while until you find out they've got a coupon you can use, go back, and you've forgotten your username? Forgetting your password isn't a problem, every site will remind you once you give your username, but if you can't remember your username you're screwed. (And, unlike the password you can settle on and use at every site, your username first choice is always already taken or invalid.) Genius-boy (that's me) finally figured out a way around that little prob. Make your username the reminder question for your password! It's so simple, yet so brilliant. I can't believe it took me five years to think of it.

Pan And Scan

I thought pan & scan always meant losing some of the widescreen image, but this ign.com article shows that doesn't always have to be exactly true. (This is my first posting using Blogger's bookmarklet. Pretty neat.)

Elian Gonzales

Do the accusations of abuse make anyone else feel like they're getting smoke blown up their ass? And, cruel as it may be to say, even if there were some truth to it ... does Cuba get to decide which American parents are fit or unfit to raise children? It's not our call. First, the kid goes home with his father. Second, let the Cuban state decide if its citizen is fit to raise the boy.

I wonder, all the women protesting Elian's return to Cuba, if their child were taken by a their spouse to Cuba and the spouse died there, would they expect their child back? I think so. Hypocrites. Cuba vs. the USA should have nothing to do with it. The boy should go home. I don't even care if he wants to go or not, you think he's old enough to decide his custody situation? Bunch of crap, that's all this is.

Shanghai Noon Buzz

Disney must think Shanghai Noon will do well. There's already talk of a sequel. I'm not crazy about the poster, but the advance buzz is Jackie and Owen Wilson have good on-screen chemistry. Opens the same weekend as MI:2, it'll be interesting to see how much audience it gets.

Movies and Music

I don't know how you guys can handle the early a.m. posts. This is about as late as I can go. Just saw High Fidelity. Damn good movie. Stephen Frears is an excellent director. It's a great role for Cusak, tons of great supporting acting too. I'm going to go see it again tomorrow (later today). Also, I put Electr-O-Pura in the disc player today, and I've been in heaven. I forgot how good that album is. Bop-bop-bodda-bop-bop....
